The Lower East Side
The Lower East Side of New York City has long been one of the nation’s most important gateways for immigrants and a crucible of American culture.
-
In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, waves of Jewish, Italian, Irish, Puerto Rican and Chinese immigrants settled there, creating one of the most densely populated and diverse neighborhoods in the world.
-
Culturally, the LES became a birthplace of artistic and musical movements—from Yiddish theater to punk rock at CBGB—while its historic synagogues, community centers, and preserved tenement buildings tell the story of generations striving for a better life.
Hey out-of-towners!
Stuff to do nearby (and beyond) ...
Some of these are meaningful to us, and some are good and convenient places in the neighborhood. From famous institutions, to obscure and beloved, it’s sort of a random compilation. New York is a big city with millions of totally far out places and popular recommendation lists, so take it or leave it sweethearts, we love you either way.
